I wanted to select a post from each month of 2009 to feature, but as I got to the end of the year, there were too many good ones to skip, so I have more links in the latter months of 2009.

Here are The Chic Life Highlights of 2009:

January

200912311530.jpg

In January, I kicked off my Weekly Food Challenge (which I need to start up again!). The first challenge ingredient was pumpkin!

February

200912311531.jpg

In February, I kicked off Small Changes, Big Results following my 2009 New Year’s Resolutions. First meal = Oatmeal!

March

200912311552.jpg

In March, I went to San Francisco! One of the best foodie places every! I kicked off my eating exploration with a trip to Chinatown and the Hang Ah Tea Room for dim sum. My fave lunch was at the vegetarian restaurant Millennium Restaurant.

April

In April, I checked in halfway through Small Changes, Big Results (SCBR) and had lost 8 pounds. I started at 133 on 2/1/09 and by 4/15/09, I weighed 124.4 pounds.

May

200912312104.jpg

In May, I went to Minneapolis, MN where I had a stand-out meal at Hell’s Kitchen (not related to the TV show).

June

200912312106.jpg

In June, I did zumba instructor training. I grew interested in being able to help people with their fitness goals and thought teaching zumba may be a good way to do so.

July

In July, I did a wrap-up post for my experience with Small Changes, Big Results to share my positive changes and POV. I also shared a brief history of me and weight loss.   By the end of SCBR, I lost 15 pounds!

August

200912312109.jpg

In August, after four years of house-hunting, hubby and I went under contract on our first house!

September

200912312111.jpg

In September, I took and passed the AFAA Primary Group Certification with some of my zumba friends.

Hubby graduated from MBA School.

200912312113.jpg

I went to Arizona where I had an enlightening meal at True Foods (a Dr. Weil restaurant).

October

200912312115.jpg

In October, hubby and I moved into our new HOUSE! We had the longest move-in day, however. Even poor Bailey seemed unhappy about the moving process!

November

200912312116.jpg

In November, while most Americans think of Thanksgiving as a day to indulge and pig-out, I helped make my family’s holiday dinner a “healthy indulgence.” I even had a Thanksgiving Challenge to encourage others to eat a little more healthily at Thanksgiving.

I also went vegan for a day (ok, a meal, but still!) and truly enjoyed the experience.

Additionally, I did a zumba instructor workshop to become an official zumba instructor (just gotta find a class now)

December

I had TWO bloggie meet-ups!

200912312123.jpg

One – a double date with hubby, Sarah of Ghost World, & Josh.

200912312122.jpg

And one with Kristen of Eating RD.

200912312126.jpg

I had THREE fabulous Christmases – one with hubby’s family , one with mine (I made another holiday dinner a healthy indulgence, and one for me, hubby and Bailey.

I made some Chic Breakfast Kits for my zumba friends.

And, I helped inspire people to spread Christmas cheer through a Holiday Cookie Challenge!

Oh, and today we bought a new car! Yippee!

Blessed

Phew! What a whirlwind year! I feel like so much has changed and so much is new. Truly, I feel blessed to be where I am and to have so many wonderful family and friends like you!

Thank you ever so much for reading and supporting The Chic Life. Your thoughtful comments and emails mean the world to me! I wish you a wonderful 2010!

Happy New Years!

Last Day of ’09

by Diana on December 31, 2009

in Books,Breakfast,Dessert,Dinner,Lunch,Shopping

I woke up this morning with a horrible crick in my neck, which meant I was going to be less productive than I had hoped to be. We still ended up having a pretty busy day!

IMG_0978.JPG

I made baked banana oatmeal for breakfast.

Mix: 1 sliced banana, 3/4 cup oats, 1 1/2 cup milk, pinch flax, pinch salt, 2 tbsp maple syrup. Add to prepped casserole dish. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes until oatmeal cooked through – serves 2.

IMG_0983.JPG

Later, I had organic lemongrass ginger tea w/ local honey to try to relax.

IMG_0984.JPG

I finished The Lovely Bones. What a beautiful book! I loved it!

IMG_0985.JPG

I had a toasted turkey sammie and leftover local sweet potato fries from last night (baked in oven to refresh) for lunch.

IMG_0986.JPG

I noshed on local donuts and peppermint tea as an afternoon snack.

Hubby and I bought a new car!

IMG_0996.JPG

Hubby and I got Mexican tonight for our NYE dinner.

IMG_0998.JPG

We used to get dressed to the nines and party it up. Tonight, we wanted to be casual and comfy. We wore jeans and sweaters. It was quite nice.

IMG_1005.JPG

Moji-garita.

IMG_1001.JPG

Cheese dip.

IMG_1008.JPG

IMG_1015.JPG

Chicken fajitas! I only had one.

IMG_1009.JPG

I got to use a pretty turquoise plate!

IMG_1017.JPG

IMG_1018.JPG

Sopapilla for dessert! Nothing like sweet, chewy deep-fried dough. Mmm…cinnamon-sugary!

IMG_1006.JPG

A good samaritan saw me placing the camera on a dining table to take our first photo. She offered to take another one and I happily accepted. Aww…see, there is lots of good in the world. I love random acts of kindness!

Hubby and I are planning to keep NYE low-key. We might watch a movie, but we’re definitely wearing PJs and staying IN! We’ll have a nice family NYE together relaxing…ahhh.

What did you do for New Year’s Eve?

Hubby and I set out to run some errands this afternoon.

IMG_0941.JPG

I brought a Babybel to snack on.

First up – rug shopping!

We found a couple rugs we liked for the bedroom:

IMG_0942.JPG

Feels light and airy

IMG_0943.JPG

Feels modern and fun

Then, we scoped out potential rugs for the dining room:

IMG_0944.JPG

Traditional with plenty of colors

IMG_0945.JPG

Fun and playful with a darker base.

We didn’t buy any rugs tonight. We took the measurements and need to figure out if they’ll even work in our rooms before buying them.

After rug shopping, we hit up Home Depot and then Lowes to buy shelves for our basement. We gotta have somewhere to put all our crapola!

Now we just need plastic bins!

IMG_0948.JPG

While we were out, we swung by Earthfare for dinner. I was CRAVING sweet potato fries and Earthfare actually serves LOCAL sweet potato fries…sweet!

IMG_0947.JPG

Hubby and I split a salad to start – romaine, baby spin, baby greens, purple cabbage, carrots, sweet bell peppers, sprouts, celery, broccoli, feta and vinaigrette dressing.

IMG_0950.JPG

IMG_0956.JPG IMG_0955.JPG

I ordered the kid’s burger – local grass-fed beef with local sweet potato fries on the side. So tasty! Though kid sized (and a steal at $3.99), I still couldn’t finish it! Hubby had the last bite of burger and I took half the fries home.

Btw, the fries had this sprinkling of coarse salt on top…heaven! I loved the sweet-salty combo.

Next up, hubby and I went to Barnes & Noble to research.

IMG_0957.JPG

I found a nice stack of books to browse – pretty diverse, no?

IMG_0958.JPG

Snack = a whole wheat chocolate chip cookie (from Earthfare) and African Autumn hot tea with honey.

IMG_0959.JPG

I really liked this Kitchen Garden book. It had lots of pictures and seemed to be a good reference guide for a beginner gardener such as myself.

IMG_0960.JPG

I also really liked this Domino – The Book of Decorating book. It had some great tips and basic info.

I held off on buying these books, though. I want to research them more. In fact, I may have found a garden book more up my alley – Square Foot Gardens with Mel!

Instead, I came home with One-Yard Wonders, Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, and a Dilbert Desk Calendar (50% off- holla!). I LOVE new books!

Have you found any good books lately?

I’m working on not sleeping in even though I’m on a stay-cation.

IMG_0914.JPG

I couldn’t wait to break into our cinnamon chip bread.

IMG_0916.JPG

IMG_0920.JPG

I made a quick breakfast of oven-broiled toast with real butter and a fried cage free egg with coffee – 1/2 Christmas Blend + 1/2 Peppermint Creme.

How-to Multi-task Errands

I love to multi-task it when I’m doing errands. I feel like, when done correctly, I can get so much more accomplished than when I take things step by step.

Step 1 – create a list of tasks.

Step 2 – note whether a task takes a short duration or long duration and which ones need 100% attention (vacuuming) and which ones can be left alone (laundry)

Step 3 – start a long duration, no-attention-needed task. While Task 1 works, do some of the shorter tasks. When Task 1 needs your attention again, work on it or complete it, and repeat Step 3.

Continue till you’ve completed all the errands you’d like.

Example:

Today, I had the following on my task list:

  • a load or laundry – long – no-attention
  • groom Bailey – short – attention required
  • find a recipe for my new blender – short – attention required
  • lunch – short – attention required
  • mop bathroom 1 – short – attention required
  • mop bathroom 2 – short – attention required
  • sew a fabric gift – long – attention required
  • design business cards – long – attention required

I multi-tasked some of my errrands:

  • I started by putting my laundry in my washing machine.
  • While my laundry ran, I turned Food TV on in the background. I sketched out some ideas for business cards. I consulted my IMG_0924.JPG IMG_0925.JPG Martha Stewart cleaning bible to see the best way to mop my bathrooms. I groomed Bailey. I noticed a meal on Quick Fix Meals with Robin Miller that used a blender to make a yummy tomato sauce. I printed the recipe (click for recipe).
  • When my laundry was done with the wash cycle, I hung the hang-dry clothes, moved the rest to the dryer and got the dryer going.
  • While my clothes dried, hubby surprised me by bringing a friend over to show them the house. I was utterly and completely embarrassed by the state of the house, but helped hubby give our friend a tour. After our friend left, I mopped both bathrooms. IMG_0931.JPG IMG_0936.JPG Next, I had lunch. IMG_0926.JPG I started pre-washing my fabrics for my craft project. I watched a blue heron fly across my yard and into my neighbor’s yard. I browsed my new cookbooks and selected recipes to try out in the next week, possibly for Eat in Month Challenge.
  • Then, it was time to fold my laundry.

Next on the agenda:

  • iron/fold cleaned craft fabric
  • rug shopping
  • basement furniture shopping
  • plastic bin shopping
  • sorting + organizing in the house
  • maybe some other stuff…we’ll see how productive we are

Dear Bloggers…

Please…PLEASE…stop saying “Viola!” when you mean to say “Voila!” A “viola” is a musical instrument. “Voila!” is said when you want to express something like “Ta-da!” Not everyone does this, but I’ve seen it on so many blogs…you know who you are. ;)

Perfect Vegan Yogurt Parfait Breakfast

December 29, 2009
