A Dish + A Book

Thursday… the first day of the end of the week. lol. I think of Wednesday as the middle and Thursday the beginning of the end. A sign that we’re closer to 2 days of freedom. Yesssssss!

The work day was incredibly hectic, but luckily, I had Zumba to save me later. I taught a small but mighty class. So fun!

My favorite songs of the night:

  • Hella Decale
  • Diva
  • Right Round

As sun was setting, I headed out with some friends from class for dinner.

I only had my iPhone, so I just snapped a couple photos from the restaurant of the evening – Dish. A local favorite with some of the friendliest staff I’ve seen in a restaurant.

My friends (Shamecia, Talicha, and Sarah) and I went family style for dinner, sharing 1 appetizer and 3 entrees:

  • Nachos
  • Blacked Tuna, collard greens, mac and cheese
  • Pecan Chicken with honey butter, mashed potatoes, and extra deviled eggs (the eggs are a key feature of the restaurant)
  • Cajun meatloaf with extra mashed potatoes and extra collard greens

After a few minutes of divvying up food (without contamination for me – the sole germiphobe of the table), we were ready to eat. And eat we did. The food was fabulous, as always! I just love this place. 🙂

Upon getting home, I decided to try something new. The house was quiet, as hubby had already gone to bed. Instead of downloading photos to my computer, blogging, or turning on the TV, I changed, made hot tea, and got cozy on the couch with Bailey.

I spent 45 glorious minutes doing something I haven’t done in ages – reading. My book of choice – Water for Elephants. I bought it because the trailer for the movie looked really interesting, and I figured the book would better.

So far, so good. It’s quite the page turner. It’s not so much an exciting or thrilling story where you have to know what happens next. But the author, Sara Gruen, does a fantastic job of pulling you right into the story.

I can’t wait to read more. It feels good to be reading again. To lose yourself in a story completely different than your every day life.

I know it sounds silly to not really spend time reading books, but when you get into the crazy schedule of a working life, sometimes things you enjoy doing get pushed aside for must-dos or other hobbies. When I was a kid, I would spend days upon days just reading books. One of my favorite childhood authors was Christopher Pike. I blogged about his book series before and was happy to read that many of my readers are also fans. And for one of my all-time favorite books – Interview with a Vampire. Maybe it was because I saw the movie and thought Brad Pitt was a smokin hot vampire. But, I credit the fantastic storyline and writing style of Anne Rice. I read that book 3 times, and I would happily read it again. In fact, I probably should. It’s been about 10 years since I last read it.

What’s your favorite book of all time?

  1. I read ALL.THE.TIME. I make sure that I do. Usually it’s before bed, which causes me sometimes to stay up way later than I’d planned, LOL. I’ve been reading through the Harry Potter series; I’m down to the last book, which I can only read part way because I don’t want to spoil the movie!

I thought I had tried to read Water for Elephants but couldn’t get into it. Might have to try again. Word on C.Pike being awesome! I think we’ve discussed that before!

Favorite book of all time is The Last Unicorn, which is also my favorite movie…go fig it’s a cartoon!

  2. I love to read. I guess I SHOULD since I am a language arts teacher, right??? LOL. I grew up totally loving Christopher Pike books. He was definitely my favorite author as a child.

My favorite book of all time? Wow, that is hard to say. I have so many favorites! But I LOVED Little Earthquakes by Jennifer Weiner (all her books are awesome). In fact, I just reread it not too long ago. That one’s deep.

My favorite funny book is Raney by Clyde Edgerton. He’s a southern author and that book is friggin’ hilarious. It’s about two families coming together as their children marry each other. It’s priceless.

  3. Ah, flashback! I used to like the Christopher Pike books too! They were kind of morbid, but I always got sucked into them! Sadly, I don’t read enough anymore. Blogging and reading blogs, have taken over a lot of the time I probably used to spend reading.

  4. I have so many favorite books that I can’t pick. Everything from Jennifer Cruise, most of Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Harry Potter series, any Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys adventure together, and any L.J.Smith. She is really big right now because of the Vampire Diaries, which I read over 12 years ago almost. L.J. books are all really good, though the witch series is my favorite.

  5. I have to say, one of my fave books I can read over and over again is Queen of the Damned by Ms. Anne Rice. Same for her other book, Witching Hour – she’s one of my fave authors – so talented and so genuinely nice. Another fave is Bitter is the New Black by Jen Lancaster – actually, anything by her is absolutely hilar. Can’t wait for her new book to come out. I do need to read more

  6. It’s great to hear you were a Christopher Pike fan! =) I am 32 yrs. old and still have some of his books. My favorite of his was Remember Me. I was such a book worm as a kid. I actually set a challenge to myself to read at least 2 books a month this yr., because I wanted to make reading for enjoyment a priority in my life again. I have you to thank for inspiring me w/ the eat-in challenge, because now I am all about the monthly challenges. I find monthly goals to be so much more affective for than (less measurable) once-a-year resolutions.

    • Tabitha, Awesome! I slacked off for May, but I’m hoping to bring a new challenge to the blog for June. 🙂

How’s your 2 books a month challenge going?

  7. I’m a huge reader, but I guess that’s obvious since that’s what my blog is about 🙂 My all time favorite is Crime and Punishment by Dostoevsky. I am partial to Charolette’s Web, though, since that was the first “real” book I ever read.

I thought WFE was a good, quick, easy read. I am very interested to see what they do with the movie!

  8. Thursday was a fun time as always! My favorite book has been Little Women by Louisa M. Alcott but my all time favorite author is Jodi Piccoult, if you haven’t read one of her books you have been deprived, but no fear, I own *almost* every book she’s published and you can borrow. We should have a book club!
