Jacob’s Pickles NYC and Coconut Smoothies (Sis Visit)

After our dim sum, bubble tea, and Phantom adventure, Sis and I had plenty of other interesting NYC outings ahead.

We enjoyed some of the goodies she bought in Chinatown for a breakfast. We had this interesting braided almond pastry and some green tea cake with cherries and watermelon.

For one brunch, we decided to visit the Upper West Side and go to Jacob’s Pickles. What we didn’t expect was the almost two hour wait. But, we had our hearts set on the restaurant. So, we waited. And you know what? It was worth it.

Our appetites must have grown during the wait because we ended up ordering two main dishes and a side of mac and cheese. That’s what happens when you browse the Yelp photos for a restaurant while you’re waiting for your table.

Sis ordered the chicken and pancakes.

Look how tall and fluffy those pancakes are! I think each pancake was bigger than her head.

I ordered the oatmeal, which sounds boring but was actually really good. And probably the richest bowl of oatmeal I’ve had. I had dance practice coming up soon, so I didn’t want to eat too much before dancing around in a hot studio. Those places get super hot in the summer.

What I really liked about this oatmeal was that it came with lots of dried fruit on top and was super creamy. I also appreciated the egg on the side to balance out the sweetness.

Jacob’s Pickles was so busy, these brave souls opted to eat outside, even though it was blazing hot.

My only regret. Not ordering pickles! Guess I’ll have to go back.

After making sure sis was good on her subway training (passed on from my training earlier this year), we parted ways so I could go to dance class. I had a practice I couldn’t miss for an upcoming performance.

And then Sis met up with me at the studio so we could search for what else. Food. We walked to West Village.

We went to Juice Generation for Kale Koladas. These green smoothies were made with fresh coconut juice from coconuts we selected at the shop. After being whipped up, the Kale Koladas are served *in* the coconuts.

They’re not practical for riding the subway, so I sometimes get this smoothie served in a cup. But the coconuts are definitely more fun.

I love how refreshing these are after a workout thanks to all that fresh coconut water.

I already blogged about the workouts we did while Sis was in NYC. You can check out that post here.

Since Studio ANYA is in the Flatiron district, I surprised sis with a sneaky visit to the Flatiron Building. I took her down 23rd because I knew she wouldn’t be able to see the building immediately as she was walking up to it, since you approach it from the side and you can’t see the iconic shape from this angle. We got just in front of the building and then I walked north with her a little so we were walking away from the building. Then I asked her, “Guess what’s right here?” She looked perplexed. “Turn around!” I said. And there it was. The Flatiron Building! After a quick photoshoot, we headed out for dinner.

Next time – two of our favorite dinner spots from her trip!
