Purple Hair & Electric Knee

by Diana on February 28, 2012

They say you shouldn’t get your hair cut immediately following a break up, but I wonder if the same can be said of a stressful situation (regardless of the cause).

short hair do.JPG

I knew things were getting pretty crazy (stress-wise) in my life, but when I started considering doing this (see spikey hair-ness above) to my hair, it was more obvious to me than ever that things were off-kilter. I should probably clarify that I do still think this hair cut is pretty bada$$, but I’m not sure it would work on me.

When I laughingly mentioned the idea of the short look to my hair stylist, Jason, (tell them I sent you for a first-timer discount!), he told me I needed a vacation…not a short hair cut.

I do need a vacation, and I’m actually planning one (yesssssss!). In the meantime, I did NOT cut my hair short.

PurpleHair-1417.jpg

Instead, I did this – a pretty dramatic trim (my hair had gotten so long – I think he took off at least 7-8 inches) and a fun (and more importantly temporary) addition of a purple streak of hair. A good look for the office? Not so much. Age-appropriate? Doubtful. Fun for Zumba class? You’re d*mn skippy. Better than a super-short hair cut that would take forever to grow out? You know it!

Anywho, all this rambling to say I’m hoping to return to regular blogging very soon. My crazy-busy work schedule is starting to let up a little. I haven’t been able to blog because the project I’ve been working on for the last three years went live two weekends ago, and I was inundated with work in the weeks approaching the go-ilve. And the weekend of go-live? I worked a regular work week up to go-live and then a little bit around 10pm on Friday, 9am/1pm/4pm/8:30pm on Saturday, and noon/4:30pm on Sunday. Phew! Things actually went pretty smoothly on my end, and I’m just helping wrap-up some post install items now. I’m almost down to 1 month left on this project, and then I go somewhere new. Where? Who knows. Time will tell.

In other news…

electric knee.JPG

I managed to (slightly) injure myself (again! grr). This time, I didn’t do anything stupid at least. I think my knee (body?) is succumbing to age, use from years of figure skating, and working out when I’m already tired…plus maybe some bad posture/alignment. Anywho, I’ve been seeing a sports doctor, who has been shooting me with electricity and laser beams. Ok, not really, but he’s been treating me and…

taped knee.JPG

…taping me up with Kineseo tape. Luckily, my injury wasn’t too bad, and I didn’t have to miss any Zumba classes! I got cleared to do low intensity Zumba sans squats, which was sort of a shame because I was just starting to actually enjoy doing squats in class. Weird, I know. Anywho, I’ve also been doing physical therapy and re-training my body to do squats and lunges properly. As a result, I’ve now become extra careful about doing squat and lunge-like moves in class, which is probably something I should have been doing anyways.

I do have some recipes queued up for you guys, and some new ideas for future recipes jotted down on random pieces of paper. Hopefully, I can bring some to life to share with you all soon.

Real Food + Really Made-Up

by Diana on October 2, 2011

in Beauty,Lunch,Restaurant

I had a couple special treats lined up for the weekend:

  • A bangin’ birthday celebration (a couple weeks late because all the Saturdays were already taken with other events, but better late than never, right?)
  • A weekend visit from my college friends Beth and Bri (one from SC and one all the way from New Orleans!)

IMG_8290-1.jpg

Beth and Bri first swung by my house Saturday morning. I made them oatmeal – a nice light meal before…

Zumba!

Beth is a Zumba instructor in SC and Bri is a Zumba regular back home. So, I figured it would be fun to take them to one of our Zumba classes. The instructor even let me lead two songs to show my friends my Zumba skillz. ;) Beth and Bri were naturals in class even though they didn’t know our choreo and both said they had a blast.

IMG_8293-1.jpg

After Zumba, we wanted something light and nourishing for lunch. Luna’s Living Kitchen was the perfect choice!

IMG_8294-1.jpg

There were a lot of good options for lunch entrees, but I fondly remember the restaurant for their quinoa burgers and ended up ordering one of those.

IMG_8302-1.jpg

We had a beautiful spread. Luna’s always has the most colorful and organic plate presentations.

IMG_8298-1.jpg

Bri shared some cranberry walnut baguette.

IMG_8296-1.jpg

Beth had the West Coast Wrap (fresh veggies and sprouts in a collard green wrap).

IMG_8297-1.jpg

Bri had the Lunasanga (zucchini and cashew cream lasanga)

IMG_8300-1.jpg

I had the Clinton Classic quinoa kamut veggie burger with a side salad with hemp dressing. Everything was so tasty and pleasant to eat. I really felt like I was giving my body some great food to replenish after a tough (oh the squats!) Zumba class.

Side note: Love quinoa burgers? It’s not a recreation of this recipe, but check out this yummy Southwest Quinoa Veggie Burger recipe I developed (click).

Happy eaters!

IMG_8306-1.jpg

Shortly after lunch my friend Sarah picked us up for a quick trip to the mall. Sarah and I had makeovers booked with my favorite make-up artist, Scott. We had a night on the town planned for later, and since I’m a klutz with make-up, I generally seek professional help with special events. Enter Scott (or Scooter as I like to call him).

IMG_8308-1.jpg

Sarah went for a natural fall look and Scooter did super-smoky eyes for me. My eyes have never been so dramatic, but they were perfect for that evening’s occasion.

With make-up out of the way, we just had to go home, get dressed, and then hit up the night scene for my birthday celebration night!

Reader question: Do you like getting make-overs at the mall? Why or why not?

Have you ever wanted to try new beauty products but been intimidated by the whole process? From picking out the correct product for your skin, to knowing if it will mesh well, there are all kinds of complications that can arise and send you into a panic. Don’t worry. I have some suggestions.

Read on for the dets, but first…some food photos…

IMG_4104-1.jpg

I made a tropical-style bowl of oats with rolled oats, banana, and coconut. I just had to put the creation in my Bahamas bowl.

After my beach vacay most of last week, I wasn’t looking forward to spending a day out of the fun and sun and in my windowless cubicle. But, it did feel good to work my way through my inbox and start being productive at the office.

***

After the (what seemed like a longer than normal) work day, I headed to Zumba!

Song #3 was a killer squat song, and I helped co-lead it, which meant I was on the stage in front of all the other participants. This means no half-a$$ing the squats, peeps. I was going all out and it took all the energy from my legs for the rest of class! lol. Thank you Press It Up for kicking my hiney. Phew! It hurts so good, though. ;)

I also really enjoyed doing:

  • My First Kiss
  • Prumm
  • Pompis Pa’Arriba

IMG_4106-1.jpg

Hubby was a doll and made dinner yet again – Earthfare salad bar…

IMG_4115-1.jpg

…and whole wheat spaghetti with grass-fed beef/tomato sauce.

IMG_4116-1.jpg

And for dessert…none other than chocolate chip cookie dough balls! It’s so nice having these back in the house again. I wonder if I’ll be baking these for the rest of my life? Will dough balls be the next jello mold? ;)

My Secrets to Finding & Testing New Skin Care Products

IMG_3019-1.jpg

Consult a Professional

Let me start by admitting that I’m a bit of a make-up/beauty product snob. I had pretty bad acne when I was a kid/teen, and tried nearly every product available at the drug store. What I finally determined was that it was better to consult a professional and pay more for 1 product than try 5 “cheap ones” that didn’t, or only semi, worked.

If you can afford it, definitely see a dermatologist. Actually, it’s safe/best to consult them before making a change to your beauty routine, especially if you have health concerns or sensitive skin.

Either way, the “professional” I’m actually talking about here is the one behind the make-up counter of your favorite shop. Not only are they trained to use the products they’re selling, they are usually expert users of the products. They’ve seen everything come through their shop, and they’ll probably be able to utilize all that training and experience to give you some great help.

Note: If you can pick a product off the shelf at CVS and have it work perfectly, then more power to you. Seriously, I’m jealous. ;) But, if you’re like me…keep reading for more tips. Not to mention, playing with new beauty products can be fun!

Get Referrals

So, like I was saying, check with the consultants of your favorite shop. Now, you may not yet know which shop is your favorite. Or, perhaps you had a favorite, but you want to try something new. Personally, I like to get referrals when I try new products/companies…preferably from people I know and trust (my mom is the one who told me about Origins).

Play the Field

When you are in the market for a new product, the world is your oyster. All the peeps at the make-up counters are ready to help you and will do anything in their power to assist you. Some may be a bit more into pressure sales than others (personally, I find that really annoying and prefer to take my business elsewhere), but don’t cave. Now is the time to play the field, try as many products as you want, and really see what’s out there.

Get a Free Consultation

Almost every make-up counter will do a free consultation, make-over, or mini facial. And places like Sephora and Ulta will be able to provide consultations for lots of different products, sometimes even suggestion a combination of products from multiple companies.

You’ll probably need an appointment, though some places do walk-ins. Your best bet is to call ahead. And while you have them on the phone, you should verify the visit will be free. Some charge money and some have minimum product purchases. Don’t get caught off-guard or allow yourself to be tricked into sales. And yes, this happened to me. I got snookered into purchasing 3 items from a not-so-cheap make-up company. Grr…

Ask Questions

While you’re having your consultation, be sure to ask as many questions as you can think of. You have the expert right there in front of you. Use their knowledge to empower yourself so you can make the best decision. Ask how to use the product (usually they show you this during your consultation), what skin types it’s best for, how long it will last, how much it costs…anything.

Samples First, Purchase Later

Given that my skin isn’t always the most agreeable, I find that I need a couple weeks testing out the product before I commit to purchase. Request free samples. They may not advertise or offer them, but they usually can provide samples. They should be able to either put a small amount in a mini pot, and sometimes they even have sample sized portions pre-packaged (like the plantscriptions sample pictured on this post). Usually, they’ll give you enough to last one week. I can often milk mine to last longer. ;)

Note: While you should play the field and test out multiple products, I don’t recommend mixing the products during test phase, unless you plan to use a mixture of products in the future. In other words, if you want to use Company A’s face wash and Company B’s moisturizer, that’s cool. But, if you’re not sure if you want to buy A or B’s moisturizer, don’t test them both out during the same week – you won’t know which one your skin likes best since you won’t know which one is working or not working.

Taking the Plunge

Test out the product with your samples. Make sure it meshes with your skin. And if you like it…go back and take the plunge by purchasing a new product or two. You don’t have to get everything at once. Sometimes there are discounts for purchasing “start up kits” or multiple products. Usually, you can just add a new product here and there until you have the whole “suite.” Just work with your schedule and budget.

And if you didn’t like the samples, fret not, just go back to playing the field!

IMG_3021-1.jpg

You may remember that I was considering buying into a new brand – Origins! After my mom recommended the brand, I researched the product online, but found there were too many options. I went into the store to learn more and got that free mini facial (it was glorious!). I came home with 3 samples: a scrub, a moisturizing mask, and some plantscriptions. I’ve been enjoying using my samples. My skin seems to be taking the new products pretty well so far, so yay! Can you believe I still have some of these samples left!?

Randomness – A Book & TV Show

I have 14 pages left of Water for Elephants! I tried finishing the book near midnight last night, but I wanted to be fully awake to enjoy the ending. You guys know how I feel about finishing this book, but I’m thinking today is the day. I’m sad the story will be over, but I’m also really excited to see how the book comes to a close. Wheeee!

Also, I’m counting down the days until Drop Dead Diva starts up again. There are few shows that I actually try to watch on a regular basis, but DDD is one of them, and Season 3 starts Sunday!!! They left us with quite the cliff hanger at the end of Season 2, so I’m SO curious to see what happens next. Is he alive? Is he dead? Are you going to tune in?

Saturday was a fabulous day!

IMG_2553-1.jpg

We started at one of my favorite places – the farmer’s market.

IMG_2551-1.jpg

Bailey was as social as ever.

IMG_2554-1.jpg

Hubby and I found lots of fresh veg to buy.

IMG_2555-1.jpg

We got some organic kale, bok choy, power lettuce mix, and snap peas.

IMG_2557-1.jpg

Then, I managed to talk (my meat-eating) hubby into getting a late breakfast at Luna’s Living Kitchen. I’ve been wanting to come to this place for forever! I used to frequent it back when it was called Real Food Charlotte, and I’m so glad it’s re-opened.

IMG_2558-1.jpg

I enjoyed lunch al fresco with my two favorite boys – hubby

IMG_2573-1.jpg

and Bailey.

IMG_2563-1.jpg

Hubby got the parfait with coconut yogurt, hemp granola, blueberries, and goji berries.

IMG_2566-1.jpg

I got the buckwheat blaster

IMG_2569-1.jpg

“This meal is the brother of the Swiss Alps creation (Bircher Muesli). It is the perfect game of the buckwheat, dates, apple, coconut, and nutmeg.”

I was reminded how much I like this place by the yummy food. I also found out the restaurant is now open for dinner Monday – Thursday. Woohoo!

IMG_2574-1.jpg

Next up – a shopping trip at Crate & Barrel! Photos of my goodies next time. ;)

IMG_2579-1.jpg

And since we were in the area, we hit up The Cowfish!

IMG_2575-1.jpg

It was hubby’s suggestion, too!

IMG_2580-1.jpg

I got to pick the entree, so he picked the appetizer.

IMG_2592-1.jpg

Crab Rangoon dip.

IMG_2603-1.jpg

For the entree, we got one of their specialty rolls. I forgot the name, and it doesn’t appear to be on their online menu.

IMG_2598-1.jpg

Basically, it had shrimp tempura (with coconut flakes), kani, cucumber, with avocado and papaya and coconut flakes on top.

IMG_2608-1.jpg

The roll was some sort of specialty today and by purchasing it, they donated 20% to Loaves & Fishes.

IMG_2609-1.jpg

It was a good excuse to try a new roll that sounded really tasty.

IMG_3851.jpg

Next up – a makeover! I got a mini facial at Origins. I’ve been a die-hard Bobbi Brown fan for the last 10+ years, but recently, I’ve been thinking of switching to more natural skin care. Since my mom started using Origins, I decided to check it out.

They did a scrub, a serum, a moisturizer, eye cream…plus a mineral powder, concealer, lip gloss, eye makeup, and mascara! Fun!

IMG_2611-1.jpg

Ta-daaaaa! I thought it looked pretty good, but I don’t wear much face makeup day to day and probably won’t be buying the make-up products. As for the skin care, I’m a firm believer in testing before you buy. So, I got enough samples of the scrub, moisturizer, and serum to last about a week. We’ll see how my skin looks then. :)

IMG_2614-1.jpg

The fun just kept going…next up we saw Bridesmaids. There were some graphic scenes I could have done without, but overall, I really enjoyed the movie and thought it was really funny. There were some parts I wish they would have tied up better, but it was worth watching. :)

IMG_2618-1.jpg

And finally, we ended the day with a pizza dinner in and watching some TV at home and just relaxing. I’m feeling much better, but still dealing with some residual fatigue from being sick last week, so I didn’t really want to do anything too crazy.

Have you seen any good movies lately? What did you see and do you recommend them?
