Hot Dog Party

Not too long ago, my friend Erica’s parents revolutionized the way I eat hot dogs. For 30 years, I had them grilled with mustard. That’s it. But at Erica’s house, they eat hot dogs covered with homemade chili, chopped onions, and homemade cole slaw. I never thought I’d like that combo, but as it turns out…I do. I reeeally do.

I got invited to a hot dog party at Erica’s parents’ house.

I even got an invite to come over early to learn Erica’s dad’s cole slaw recipe. Erica’s dad, Freddie, doesn’t do much measuring (a true family recipe!) when he makes his cole slaw. I took notes so I can translate to something you guys can re-create at home, but I’d like to try making it first to make sure I guessed the measurements correctly.

And they emailed me their homemade chili recipe. Woohoo!

I love the smell of charcoal and grilled foods in the air.

I contributed a batch of blondies for the hot dog party.

And another friend’s mom brought a refreshing strawberry jello cake dish for dessert. I’m not a big jello fan, but this was delish and perfectly refreshing for the hot weather.

After dinner, we enjoyed corn hole, lounging, and Dave Chappelle’s Killing Them Softly (don’t click if you’re easily offended – do click if you want a good laugh).

Big thanks to Freddie, Patty, and Erica for having us over for the hot dog party! Best hot dogs everrrrrrr!

Reader question: If you eat them, how do you take your hot/soy dogs? What toppings do you add?

  1. I’m a chili dog girl myself so pile it on! I’d prefer good ole’ homemade Texas (no bean) chili. Though if chili is not available, I’m down for some sweet relish, onions, mustard and miracle whip.
