Who Is Alysa Liu?

Alysa Liu is a US figure skater who won the 2025 World Championships as well as TWO gold medals in figure skating at the 2026 Olympics (for the team event and singles).

And what’s so interesting about this is – she was a child prodigy who quit figure skating and won her 2025 Worlds and 2026 Olympic gold medals as part of her amazing comeback journey.

Alysa Liu’s Comeback Story

Alysa became the youngest US women’s figure skating champion in 2019 at the age of 13, surpassing Tara Lipinski’s record at 14 years old. She was already catching attention in the figure skating community. And she really established herself as a prodigy of the figure skating world with this win.

In 2022, at only 16 years old, she came in 6th place in the Olympics, realized she no longer loved skating (even saying that competition felt like a “job”), and immediately announced her retirement post-competition.

She spent the next couple years enjoying life as a normal teenager. She even started college and went to Everest base camp. However, she found that nothing challenged her the way that ice skating did.

So, she came back to figure skating at 19 years old. But this time – on her terms.

She would choose her music, hair, food, and all the things. This time around, she wanted to avoid the painful stress she experienced in her younger competitive years. And so began her lighter, more joyful approach to skating.

Note: Oh and in case you’re curious , she has shared in interviews that she prefers that her last name is pronounced “Loo”. I stumbled upon this tidbit in my research and thought it was interesting. Sharing in case you do too!

Quotes on Alysa’s Comeback Kid Story

“I went through a whole year of school, and during winter break, I went skiing and I realized school was hard, but it was not challenging enough for me. I got into other things, like fashion, but I never went to the gym. Skating gave me something to be strong for. I love having willpower. I used to never care about programs, what you skated to, your dresses, stuff like that. Now, I love skating dresses and helping with the design process. This sport is kind of an outlet for me. I love dance and music, so it’s everything in one.”

“I thought the only way was, I had to quit” (Players’ Tribune)

Quote text graphic says: “Everyone has to take their own path. But I will say taking a break and stepping back - getting new perspective really helped me as a person."

Everyone has to take their own path. But I will say taking a break and stepping back – getting new perspective really helped me as a person. And helped me understand myself. I got to explore new areas, new hobbies, and interests, and that’s what life is all about. Trying new things and learning. And I think that everything, even my last skating career and the time I spent away from the sport and coming back to the sport…just, everything has led to that performance.” (Olympics interview)

Quote text graphic says: "No one’s gonna starve me - tell me what I can and can’t eat.”

“I get to pick my own program music. I get to help with the creative process of the program. If I feel like I’m skating too much, I’ll back down. If I feel I’m not skating enough, I’ll ramp it up. No one’s gonna starve me – tell me what I can and can’t eat.” (60 Minutes Interview)

“I think the most important part of my story is human connection. Um, really I… That’s all I want in my life is human connection. And damn now I’m connecting with a hella ton of people. Um…So that’s my dream. And I am glad I have my creative ideas or whatever, and I get to share those as well.” (USA Today Sports interview)

“I hope that you know with all this attention I can at least raise awareness about like mental health and sports. And mental health in general. And I think my story is pretty cool. And so I hope that inspires some people as well.” (USA Today Sports interview)

“It was more than just work. It was experience. The last time I was skating, it was so rough. I genuinely cannot even begin to start on it. It took a lot to get to this point. And yes psychology and school really did help.” (On sharing the work it took to get to the state of calm and joy while competing – Raymond Braun, Olympic correspondent, interview question)

Quote text graphic says: “Take those breaks. You need them. And don’t let anyone push you past your breaking point. You are the only one that knows your limit. And you know yourself."

Take those breaks. You need them. And don’t let anyone push you past your breaking point. You are the only one that knows your limit. And you know yourself. I would say every athlete should take a break. Or not just every athlete but every person. Take a break from that life you’re like so stuck in. Because stepping back will give you such a different perspective. And you learn so much. And that’s what life is about.”

“Being grounded is really what keeps me. And I love exploring other hobbies. Doing side quests and what not. It keeps me curious.” (Raymond Braun, Olympic correspondent, interview question)

“That’s what I’m f*cking talking about!” (Said to the camera immediately after completing her Olympic gold free skate)

“Being able to do it my way on the big stage like this has been my dream. And I got to do it in my short. I got to do it in the team event. And I got to do it tonight for the free skate. And I’ll gonna to do it again for the Olympic Gala. So I don’t know, I’m just over the moon. I’m the luckiest girl ever. And yeah, I’m really grateful.” (On winning on her terms – NBC News Interview after winning Olympic Gold)

“I don’t need this. But what I needed was a stage and I got that. So I was all good, no matter what. If I fell on every jump, I would still be wearing this dress, so it’s all good.” (Post competition interview – Cosmopolitan)

Quote text graphic says: “What I like to share about myself is my story, my art, and my creative process. I guess messing up doesn’t take away from that. It’s still something. It’s still a story. A bad story is still a story, and I think that’s beautiful. There’s no way to lose.”

Additionally, the color scheme is aligned to her Instagram profile photo. I saw her describe in an interview that the bowl is full of Lucky Charms marshmallows that she hand selected. And she seemed really excited about it.

So colorful, so fun, and so Alysa! Thus, the quote graphics had to match! 😉
