Handmade Christmas: Hot Cocoa Mix

I love to make stuff for Christmas gifts. I love to buy things for people too, but the creative side of me has fun putting things together and getting all crafty. I’ve always wanted to mix up a bunch of those layered-cookies-mixes-in-a-jar type things, and we say we’ll do them every year, but never quite get around to doing them.

This year, we decided to go ahead and try out one of the “homemade mix” recipes I found online for Hot Cocoa Mix. I found a great-looking recipe with good reviews online (click for link and recipe).

Hubby was in charge of measuring and mixing the ingredients.

He also picked up these holiday mugs at Crate + Barrel.

I was in charge of packaging.

I found some decorative ribbon and red scrapbook paper. I used a punch-tool to cut out 2 circles per bag of hot cocoa. I wrote “Hot Cocoa Mix” on one circle and the directions on the other.

I taped a ribbon wrapped vertically around the hot cocoa bag (with the top folded down). I placed the circles on top of the ribbon seams to cover them.

I filled the mugs with shredded red paper.

The cocoa bags went into the mug.

I added candy canes (to stir the hot cocoa).

Voila! A Hot Cocoa kit. Just add boiling water!

Just like Santa’s Workshop!
