One of the most challenging times of my life was when I was going through my divorce. The life I’d known that had once been so stable was crumbling before my eyes. And it often felt like I was crumbling with it. I had good days and bad days. But, I intuitively knew that I needed to do something to keep myself together.

The approach worked, and I managed to get on the other side of my divorce stronger. In fact, even though I was going through one of the hardest and most grief-filled things I’d lived through yet, I was also stepping into my most high vibe self.

And the best part? The sadness has washed away with time, while my high vibes have grown stronger.

Here are my 5 steps for getting out of despair the high vibe way.

Step 1 – Allow the Emotion

There are many misconceptions out there that being positive means that you’re happy and positive all the time. And that by being sad or upset, you’re no longer a “positive person”. This is simply not true.

We are spiritual beings having a human experience. We experience both ups and downs. And feeling down is totally natural and even expected.

So rather than trying to block your “negative” feelings (which can create emotional trauma), it’s important to let yourself feel your emotions without judgement.

The trick is that you don’t want to stay in those emotions too long. There’s a point where you’re letting yourself experience your feelings naturally. And then there’s a point where you’re wallowing in feelings of sadness.

Feeling your feelings is good. Staying in a sad/low vibe state for too long is unnecessary and at some point no longer benefits you.

Step 2 – Trust the Universe

When I’ve gone through challenging and even sad situations, I’ve often found myself questioning…why? Why meeeeee?! Why is this happening to me????

Sound familiar?

But in my experience, the low times meant something. They served a purpose that ultimately got me to something good. Something I really wanted.

So I’ve learned to put my trust in the Universe. I like to affirm:

The Universe is always working for my highest good

Indeed, my experience is that it is. Though it can be difficult (if not impossible) to see when you’re in the middle of a challenging time, I find it helpful to re-affirm my trust in the Universe. Because it is always working for your highest good.

Step 3 – Ask High Vibe Questions

As part of that trust, I also find it helpful to ask high vibe questions and derive some meaning or learning from the down situation.

I like to ask what it could mean. What lesson could be hiding in this seemingly crappy situation.

And I’ve surprised myself at my own takeaways. Learnings that often empowered me and were the exact thing that ultimately strengthened and calmed me.

Look at your situation with objective curiosity. Look for the purpose. The meaning. The takeaway. What have you learned about the world? Yourself? Go deep here. This can be a really inspiring exercise if you lean into it with open arms.

Step 4 – Practice Gratitude

If you’ve been with The Chic Life for awhile, then you’d know I’m a HUGE advocate for gratitude in general. So much so that I have all my one-on-one clients take up the practice.

Gratitude not only generates some of the most amazing powerful energy that can help raise your vibe no matter what’s going on, it can help show you that even though times may be tough, there is still good in your life.

When I found my thoughts going to despair, I’d remind myself of even the simple things that are so easy to take for granted: you have a roof over you head, clean clothes, clean water, delicious food, friends, and so much more. Sometimes the simple things in life truly are the best. Remember that.

This is not to make light of whatever is going on for you currently. Rather to help shift your mindset to something that will empower you more and take some of the fear away. Taking notice of your current abundance in any form can truly help with this.

Step 5 – Focus on the Good

And along the lines of gratitude, focusing on the good can help your vibe stay strong and also keep your perspective in a high vibe place.

What you look for you’ll get more of. So if you don’t want to spiral into despair, don’t let it take you down.

Keep an eye out for good things. Do you have friends and family supporting you? Do you have a means of getting to work? A job? This isn’t a time for cynicism, even if you don’t have a job or car.

Focusing on lack will generate more lack. Focusing on abundance will create more abundance.

Focusing on the good will generate more good and help pull you to a better place.
