Hey guys! I have a lot of catching up to do. I’ve had some fun adventures while I’ve been working in NYC, and I really want to share them with you!
NYC Subway Training
One of my first adventures was with my friend Dana. I was so fortunate to have her to help me navigate NYC. She moved from Charlotte to NYC a couple years ago and understood what it was like for a Southerner to navigate the Big Apple.
Dana got me started with some subway training. The subway can be really confusing, so I really lucky to have her help navigating it. First up – I had to get a metro card.
Note hand not wanting to touch the machine. So germiphobic. So not sorry.
This picture was taken about 5 seconds before a subway train pulled in, so we hurriedly flew through the buttons on the screen to get a quick pay card, rush through the turnstile (how do you swipe? gah?!), and literally jump into a subway car. We made it. Barely. It wouldn’t be the last time I ran to catch one of these!
Then, I had to figure out which way to go. I’m writing this after taking the subway for a couple months now, so the signs make total sense to me now. But at the time, there were just too many signs. Which one do you look at for what? Dana told me what to look for. Phew! Thank goodness for her.
If any of you are planning a visit and want some tips, let me know. I’m thinking of making a NYC guide with tips on navigating the city, plus my some lists of my favorite places.
NYC Chinatown Dim Sum
My first trip on the subway was to Chinatown. NYC dim sum was high on my list of to-dos. Upon first coming up from the subway, the buildings looked like any other part of town. At least where we came up. But once I started seeing the signs, I realized we really were in Chinatown.
Dana took me to the Golden Unicorn, which is one of the more popular dim sum options in the city.
We went pretty late in the day for dim sum, but I managed to score some of my favorites. We started with har gow, shrimp shui mai, and shrimp and vegetable dumplings.
I also ordered a plate of Chinese broccoli and for the first time that I’ve encountered had the option of two sauces. I’ve only ever had Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, so I opted for the other. It was an interesting, thick sauce with a light, almost sesame oil like taste. I prefer oyster sauce, even though the name sounds weird. Trust me, it doesn’t taste fishy. It tastes delicious.
There were no baked pork buns left, but I did manage to score some steamed before halting the orders. We were there so late, there weren’t many carts, so I was actually ordering directly from the waiter. Thank goodness I’ve been eating dim sum for years!
Dana took us out of Chinatown the scenic way so I could see some other cool features of the area.
Brooklyn Heights Promenade
After walking around for a bit, I took my first trip to Brooklyn.
Dana took me to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade so I could see this…
One of the best views of the city! I couldn’t stop taking pictures.
You can even see the Statue of Liberty from here (see it in the center, above?).
So, so pretty.
After the photoshoot, it was time for more subway training. Back underground!
Next up, adventures in West Village.
