SCBR Week 6/ Day 5 Food/Exercise Journal

7:30 am – Coffee – Content (5)

IMG_3766.JPG

I forced myself to get going sooner than I have been so far this week because I had an early meeting this morning at work. I think forcing yourself is the key to getting moving in the morning. I usually do a lot better if I just make myself get up without letting me snooze even once.

Today’s brew – 1/2 Jamaican Blue Mountain + 1/2 Hazelnut

8:30 am – Blueberries + Cream Oats – First Signs of Feeling Full (6)

DSCN5203.JPG

I got to work just in time to make the meeting this morning and cooked up some oats in the microwave at the office so I could eat breakfast during the meeting. Probably not the most professional thing I could have done, but I really wanted breakfast and we’re a pretty casual office when we’re not at client sites.

Earlier this week, I got blueberries since I’m supposed to be eating colorful fruits + veggies, so I decided to make Blueberries + Cream Oats – one of my faves.

Pre-cooking:

  • 1/4 cup 1-minute quick cooking oats (the last of my container! that went fast!)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp flax seed
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup blueberries

Post-cooking:

  • 2 tbsp 2% milk (a little extra than normal to make it extra “creamy”)
  • 1 tbsp sliced almonds, on top

Probably shoulda put more sugar in the mix, but I like to try to let the fruit be the sweetener. I’ve been working for a loooong time to wean myself off the sugar in the oats, but some days are easier to not miss the extra sugar than others.

12:00 am – Crabcakes + Roasted Potatoes – First Signs of Feeling Full (6)

DSCN5209.JPG

Due to news that I can’t quite release yet (sorry!), I am trying to live up eating out with co-workers. I went out with 2 friends from the office to a local restaurant where I had a great experience with some dinner crabcakes. I decided to get the crabcakes again, but was a little disappointed. The flavor was still delish and the texture was great, but the crabcake was a little cool and I wondered if the center was even cooked or maybe the whole thing just cooled down quickly while they waited for another entree to finish up. I probably should have said something to the manager…not to be mean, but if I was the manager of a restaurant and someone wasn’t happy with their meal, I’d want to know what it was so I wouldn’t make the same mistake again.

I still very much enjoyed the crabcake besides the coolness. The crabcake had a nice crunchy crust and again…the flavor and texture of it is really just amazing. The potatoes were a little oily for my taste, but I wonder if that’s more to do with the healthfest I had yesterday for lunch. I find that when I start eating healthier and healthier, the heavier “normal” food tastes and sometimes, it doesn’t even taste “good!” Weird how that works out.

I ate 1/2 the crabcake and most of the potatoes, which I estimated to be about 1/2 cup. I figured the meal would be ridiculously unhealthy, but when I added everything up, it was ridiculously low. Maybe my portion size was just that small? I was a bit full still from breakfast when we went.

3:30 pm – String Cheese, Yogurt, Wheat Germ + Water – First Signs of Feeling Full (6)

DSCN5214.JPG

The reason I bought those blueberries was because I got this fruit salad yesterday and hit every single color of the rainbow but blue! So, I added the blue, myself. I had red watermelon, orange cantaloupe, yellow pineapple, green melon, blue blueberries, and purple grapes. Unfortunately, the fruit seemed a bit spoiled or at least old and I don’t mess with expired food, so I didn’t eat ANY of it! Boo!

So, instead, I decided to have some string cheese…

…and a Strawberry Wallaby yogurt, topped with…

…toasted wheat germ! Yum! Such a great snack!

4:45 pm – Kashi Crackers – First Signs of Feeling Full (6)

DSCN5221.JPG

By the end of the day, I estimated I only had about 660 calories…it seemed so low! I was feeling a wee bit snacky, so I carbed up with a serving of Kashi 7 grain crackers. These things seem to stay crunchy and fresh forever! I feel like they’ve been in my desk for the longest time but still taste great!

5:30 pm – Shopping – Happy

After work, I did some clothing shopping to update my wardrobe for an upcoming project (part of that big news I keep hinting at). I probably shouldn’t have added it to my Fitday.com Activities, but I did! According to Fitday.com, I burned about 124 calories from my spree! Craziness!

I had a great time shopping (what girl doesn’t!?) and got some good deals! Now, if only J Crew would have some better sales!

After shopping, I got my hair cut! I should have taken a photo…my stylist is amazing and always does the best job!

8:30 pm – Burgers, Fries + Coke – First Signs of Feeling Full (6)

DSCN5225.JPG

I had visions of veggie sandwiches floating through my head as I brainstormed dinner plans. Unfortunately, after working a full day, shopping, and having an evening hair appointment, I didn’t really feel like hitting up the grocery store and I didn’t have enough to supplement veggies for a sammy. Cheese and/or hummus really would have made it do-able, I think.

Hubby ended up talking me into Five Guys for dinner. I used to think I was the bad influence for eating out all the time, but lately, I’m wondering if it’s really him? You reading this, hubby?

Dinners to date recently:

  • Friday – out – pizza dinner
  • Saturday – in/out – chicken quesadillas/Moe’s chips + queso
  • Sunday – in – shrimp, rice, + broccoflower
  • Monday – out – sushi dinner
  • Tuesday – out – Chick-fil-A
  • Wednesday – in – Egg scramble wraps
  • Thursday (tonight) – out – Five Guys burgers

Wow…that’s a whole lot of eating out and eating some not-so-healthy meals, too. Things have been pretty crazy lately, but I think that means I just need to work harder at making better choices. Looking at that list makes me feel a little (read: very) disappointed in my food choices lately. I didn’t pick a lot of them, but I surely didn’t fight to eat healthier. I guess keeping this food journal really is eye-opening. Anywho, moving along…

I had a little cheeseburger.

DSCN5224.JPG

I actually only had 1/2 a little cheeseburger with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and ketchup.

Hubby ordered the large fries to share. I tried to warn him that we should get the regular, but he didn’t listen. We got this whole big cup of fries…

DSCN5231.JPG

PLUS all these in the bottom of the bag! I tried to point out the sign saying that the large fries feeds roughly 3 people, but oh well…now we know for sure.

DSCN5234.JPG

I had about 3/4 cup of fries.

DSCN5233.JPG

I had a coke to drink, but only had about 1/4 of this. I usually try to order kid’s sized drinks because the “normal” ones are soooo big!

Dinner was so tasty…I’ve been in the mood for a good burger and fries lately, and this fits the bill. I’m glad I was able to keep my portions in check, too, though I shouldn’t have gone for those extra fries at the end…I was pretty darn full!

Shortly after getting home, I grabbed some of those peppers I sliced up yesterday. My day was pretty fruit + veggie free, so I was feeling the urge to veg-up. I did feel a little better after eating these pepper pieces.

9:30 pm – Baklava – Full (7)

IMG_3771.JPG

I had that piece of baklava I didn’t finish off yesterday tonight. I probably didn’t need dessert after the heavy meal we had, but it was day-old already and I didn’t want it to go to waste. Poor hubby asked yesterday on the phone how many pieces of baklava I wanted when he was at the Mediterranean restaurant. I said 1 and he ended up coming home with 2 to be sweet. I couldn’t tell him I really, honestly, and genuinely just wanted 1 piece (hope you’re not reading honey). Oh well, it was the thought that counts…and my waistline that’s going to pay for it! lol….jk

IMG_3772.JPG

I had dessert with a wee bit of milk – about 1/3 cup. A very sweet ending to the day, indeed! Excessive, but given with good intentions.

Calorie Summary

Calories Eaten: 1551
Calories Burned: 124
Net Calories: 1427

I’m a little surprised that my calorie total is under my goal of 1437 considering everything I ate today, but maybe it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was the whole time. Still, I feel like I really could have done better with the eats today since we have a fridge full of fresh veggies and some fruit. I’ve tried to be flexible lately with hubby and our budget and the newly busy schedule and the time change and trying to spend time with co-workers, but maybe I’m being too flexible at the expense of my diet? Don’t get me wrong…I have no problem eating burgers and fries, but I prefer the majority of my meals to be on the healthier side. I’m going to have to do better next week with eating in and pushing myself to eat more healthy meals.
