Healthy Dragon Fruit Banana Smoothie Recipe Ingredients

You only need four simple ingredients to make this delicious, tropical smoothie recipe.

Dragon Fruit

Dragon fruit, also known as pitaya or strawberry pear, is a tropical fruit that is believed to originate from Central America. This fruit is also popular in Southeast Asia. There was actually a beautiful dragon fruit in my private villa when I visited Thailand.

Dragon fruit actually comes in three colors: white, yellow, and hot pink! The flesh is speckled with tiny black seeds. I most frequently find the white flesh variety in grocery stores. When seeking the pink flesh option, I most easily find frozen puree packets.

The pink puree packet is what I use to give this smoothie a naturally bright magenta color. No food coloring needed!

Generally, this fruit isn’t always the easiest to find fresh in the US fresh. You can more easily find pitaya/dragon fruit in pieces or puree packets in the frozen section of your grocery store. I even found frozen dragon fruit pieces in the Ingles in my small hometown, Greenville, SC. I use the frozen dragon fruit pieces for this recipe, but you could substitute the other forms.

Dragon fruit is super healthy too. It contains vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and is also a good source of fiber.

Banana

This smoothie is made without added sugars thanks to the natural sweetness of the dragon fruit + banana. The banana also adds bulk and additional nutrients, including potassium, copper, and magnesium.

I prefer ripe bananas for this recipe. As you consider how sweet you want your smoothie – note that bananas that are more ripe will yield a sweeter smoothie.

Non-Dairy Milk

I love to add non-dairy milk to my smoothies to give them a nice, creamy texture and flavor. My favorite plant-based milk at the moment is oat milk. As long as you use a vegan milk, this recipe will be vegan.

You can use any milk of your choice in this smoothie. Coconut milk would pair perfectly with the tropical flavor of this Healthy Dragon Fruit Banana Smoothie Recipe.

Ground Flaxseed

Whole flaxseed can’t be processed by your body, so make sure you use ground flaxseed / flaxseed meal in your recipes. This provides added fiber for digestion and regularity as well as omega-3 fatty acids and nutrients like the B-vitamin thiamine, copper, and magnesium.

Optional Add-Ins

  • Ice Cubes: To make this smoothie more frosty, add ice cubes til it reaches your preferred texture. If you use fresh bananas and dragon fruit, you’ll likely need to add a handful of ice cubes to keep the smoothie texture. Alternatively, if you use frozen bananas and frozen dragon fruit, I recommend skipping ice cubes.
  • More Tropical Fruits: You could also switch up your smoothie flavor by adding another exotic fruit like mango, pineapple, papaya or beyond.
  • Coconut Water: Play into the tropical flavors of this smoothie and use coconut water instead of plain water to make this smoothie more liquidy, if desired.
  • Chia Seeds: Add in some chia seeds to increase the protein, fiber, and healthy fats of this smoothie recipe.
  • Maple Syrup: If you want your smoothie to be even more sweet, consider adding in an unrefined sweetener, like maple syrup.

Making This Healthy Dragon Fruit Banana Smoothie Recipe a Meal vs a Snack

As is, this smoothie has approximately 280 calories and 5 grams of protein, which puts it on the lighter side. I usually have this as a healthy snack or a component of a meal, like a healthy breakfast including avocado toast.

If you want to have this smoothie as a full meal, you may want to add some of your favorite protein powder to help make this more substantial and filling.

How to Make a Dragon Fruit Banana Smoothie – 3 Steps

Making this healthy dragon fruit smoothie recipe is a piece of cake. All you need to do is combine the ingredients in your favorite blender, blend until smooth, and enjoy!

  1. In your blender cup/bowl, add your banana (broken into smaller pieces with your hands), dragon fruit pieces, oat milk, and ground flaxseed.
  2. Cover your blender and blend until smooth, adding additional oat milk or water until the smoothie reaches your desired texture.
  3. Serve and enjoy!

This should take only about 5 minutes (or less!) to whip up.

Tip: The secret ingredient for making this quick and easy is a bag of frozen dragon fruit pieces. This means you can make this whole healthy pitaya smoothie recipe without needing to use (and then clean) any knives or cutting boards. This is perfect for your busy schedule!

If you decide to make this with fresh dragon fruit, then you’ll want to allocate more time. Although fresh dragon fruit is very easy to cut, it may take some time to remove the fruit from the skin. You’ll also likely want to add some ice or use a frozen banana for that classic, chilled smoothie texture and temperature.

Make This Healthy Dragon Fruit Smoothie Gluten-Free

It’s really easy to make this healthy pitaya smoothie recipe gluten-free. The pitaya, banana, and flaxseed are naturally gluten-free. If you have an allergy / Celiac disease – read any food product labels to ensure there is no cross-contamination.

Not all oat milks are gluten-free, so be sure to choose a gluten-free oat or other non-dairy milk to keep this smoothie recipe gluten-free. Be sure to check for cross-contamination, if needed.

Naturally Hot Pink?! Seriously, No Added Food Coloring!

Several years ago, I got slightly obsessed with finding ways to make colorful foods without food colorings. Who remembers the viral Healthy Unicorn Smoothie Recipe I made?!

Most food dyes have…let’s just call them “questionable ingredients.” I’ve researched them for a few years now, and some sources say that some artificial food dyes are toxic and have been linked in studies with many health issues. Whilst other sources say that those studies aren’t legit. Personally, I like to err on the side of caution, so I try to avoid food dyes as much as possible.

And it’s so easy to make beautiful, vibrant food using fruits, vegetables, and other whole foods when you just know what ingredients to use!

This easy pitaya smoothie is naturally hot pink!

Dragon fruit actually comes in three colors: white, yellow, and hot pink. The hot pink fresh fruit version is SUPER vibrant. When added to smoothies and smoothie bowls, it helps you create a gorgeous bright pink, sometimes even hot pink finished product.

Make sure you get the pink pitaya version if you want to make this hot pink pitaya smoothie recipe. It would be equally delicious with the white and yellow dragon fruit, though. Yum!
