Shifting from Feeling Powerless and Hopeless

I know what it’s like to feel powerless and hopeless. Like things just aren’t going to get any better and there’s nothing you can do about it. Like life keeps knocking you down time and time again.

It’s like standing in the chest/shoulder height water level of the ocean and getting knocked around and around. Like you can never quite get your feet under you.

But here’s the thing: you have a choice.

You can let yourself get pushed around by the ocean…or life. Or not.

You can choose to take what life’s throwing at your lying down or you can stand up and do something about it.

I choose to fight. What about you?

Shifting *to* Empowered and Confident

Close your eyes and picture yourself moving through life in confidence. Knowing that you can do anything you put your mind to. Trusting yourself to create goals and plans and to take action to see them become your reality.

How beautiful would that be?

From my experience, the more I believe in the beauty of my dreams *and* my ability to make change happen in my life, the better my life has gotten.

I like to think this is possible for all of us.

Quote graphic. "Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me." ~Carol Burnett

“Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.”

~ Carol Burnett

You are the only one who can change your life.

Once you make this mindset shift, you will go from being a victim to being empowered. You’ll go from feeling hopeless to feeling hopeful…and ready to do something about it.

Are you ready?

8 Tips to Claim the Power to Change Your Life

#1 Gain Awareness of Your Power

The first step to owning your power is to be aware that it’s there.

You may not believe you have any power. Society and ill-intentioned folk are so good at tricking us into believing that we are powerless.

But you’ve had it there all along.

This post is here to be your first step. To remind you that it’s there and ready for you to claim.

Ready for more?

Let’s keep going.

#2 Assess How You Feel about Your Power

Now that you know your power is there, even if you don’t feel it, the next step is to assess how you feel about it.

Consider this positive affirmation: I have the power to change my life.

Say it with me: I have the power to change my life

Assess your feelings about your power:

  • How does it feel to know you already have the power within you to change?
  • What does this power feel like to you currently?
  • How did you feel reading that powerful affirmation above?

Not sure? Here’s a good test…

Go to a mirror, look at yourself, and say out loud: I have the power to change my life.

A woman looking at herself in the mirror and smiling
A fun (and sometimes challenging) exercise with affirmations is to say them to yourself in a mirror. You’ll likely have to repeat until you can say it with confidence. It can be very awkward at first. Lol! Sometimes you have to do a little extra work to fully release resistance. Either way, once you can say the affirmation while feeling strong and empowered, you’ll really be on your way to calling that energy in.

Do you feel like a fraud saying it out loud? Does it feel weird to say?

Those yucky feelings are your resistance bubbling up. Don’t worry, they’re natural. They’re part of the mindset work we need to do to help you re-claim your strength and confidence in your ability to change.

They’re there because change is hard. Your subconscious mind doesn’t like to change. It wants to keep you safe. And safe = the same.

Allow whatever feelings are coming up for you. Release judgement and choose to be curious about them instead.

If you want to take this further, consider journaling about your assessment. Here are some journal prompt ideas:

  • How do you feel about knowing you have the power to change your life?
  • What’s coming up for you?
  • What are you feeling?
  • What negative (or other) thoughts are arising?
  • Are you noticing any patterns or having any a-has?

Write it all down. Feel free to repeat the above exercises as you feel called.

Are you ready to release any resistance you’re feeling?

#3 Deciding to Claim Your Power

Next, it’s time to *decide* to claim your power.

This may feel silly, but a decision can send a strong signal to yourself, your subconscious mind, and the Universe / God / Your Higher Power that you’re ready to change and own your strength.

There’s a difference between receiving information and thinking, “oh that’s nice” and actually deciding, “YES! I’m ready to own my strength!”

So when you’re ready, decide to claim the power to change your life.

"You can, you should, and if you're brave enough to start, you will." ~Stephen King

#4 Set the Intention to Claim Your Power

Now that you’ve decided you’re ready, it’s time to declare it!

Declaring your intention takes your decision to the next level.

Declaring tells yourself, your subconscious mind, and the Universe / God / Your Higher Power that you mean business.

Ready?

Say it out loud: I claim the power to change my life.

Is it feeling better yet?

Say it again – this time like you mean it: I claim the power to change my life!

Yesss! You have the power to change your life! Own that sh*t!

#5 Note the Ways You Already Own the Power to Change Your Life

In 2023, I did something I’ve wanted to do since 2016 – Yoga Teacher Training! I went from someone who had to look around the room to keep up in yoga to someone who can move through class in confidence. And when I’m ready, I’ll teach class!

One of the easiest and best ways to shift your mindset is to look for proof that you’ve already done the thing you’re doubting you can do. That it’s already happened.

Because if you’ve already done it, then you already know you can do it again. And do more.

Make a list of ways you have already changed your life. No matter how small.

Have you purposefully:

  • tried a new hobby?
  • moved to a new city?
  • changed your style?
  • learned how to play a musical instrument
  • tried a new restaurant / coffee shop / etc.?
  • made a new friend?
  • tried a new commute?
  • gotten a new job?

Sure, sometimes life forces change on us. But there are things we choose to do to change our reality. You might not have paid much attention to them before. But they count!

When you choose something in life, you are actively using your power.

Use this evidence to strengthen your belief in your ability to change your life. You’ve done it before, and you can do it again.

#6 Take Action and Change Your Life (Even in Small Change Works)

After hearing all my life that I’d never make any money doing my art, I decided to try it anyway in 2023. I started making stickers out of my drawings and sold them at local markets, making myself a paid artist! Also, f*ck haters.

Now that you remember that you have the power to change your life and you’ve strengthened your belief in your capability, let’s use this energy to start making change happen.

Think about some of the things you want to do to change your life:

  • Maybe you have a list
  • Maybe you want to start some healthy habits
  • Maybe you want to manifest something small
  • Maybe you would like to try a new hobby, move to a new city, do a personal rebrand, learn a new language, or more.
  • Maybe you want to make a fresh start in life in general.

Pick something. Anything. It can be super tiny.

When you’re ready, take action, and make that change happen.

Recognize that you made that change happen. Celebrate your win.

Even if it’s a hobby that requires multiple days, months, and beyond of repetition, remember to celebrate your little wins along the way.

#7 Affirm Your Power to Change Your Life

Whilst action is powerful in us recognize our strength, remember that so much of change starts in the mind.

Let’s revisit that intention from tip #4 and make it stronger.

Remember to affirm your new belief in your abilities to keep this positive momentum going forward.

Say it with me: I have the power to change my life (in caps)

Take your intention and use it as a daily affirmation.

Say it with me: I have the power to change my life.

I have the power to change my life

Here’s how to use this affirmation:

  • Say it out
  • Write it in your planner
  • Put this affirmation on a sticky note on your mirror and say it when you see it
  • Write it in your journal

And keep affirming it. Affirming your intention solidifies it and makes it stronger.

Tip: for affirmation success, it’s important to feel good while you use it. If you’re feeling yucky about it (aka feeling resistance) go back to step #1 and repeat. Choose to release any resistance you’re feeling while using the affirmation. The goal is to repeat until you feel good and confident while saying the affirmation.

#8 Repeat, Pick Yourself Up, and Keep Going

“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end.” ~ Robin S. Sharma

I don’t want to create any limiting beliefs for anyone, but the reality is that change can be difficult to execute.

If it was easy and everyone executed it perfectly every time, people would be changing all the dang time.

So be prepared for things to sometimes go sideways or take longer than you thought. Not that they will, but that it’s possible.

Embrace the ups and downs of the journey. You may not get your change nailed the first time, but keep trying. Be open to creative possibilities and new ways of doing things. But keep believing in the overall beauty of your dreams.

Overall: Don’t worry, having to try something again doesn’t mean you’re a failure. Failure only happens when you quit.

An Important Clarification Being Ready to Change

Diana standing in a crosswalk with the skyline of San Francisco, CA behind her on a beautiful blue sky day.
The time of my life after my divorce proved to be one of my most challenging yet. Despite everything that was going on, I managed to manifest moving cross-country. I went from small-town SC gal to big city dream achiever in San Francisco, CA. It’s one of the biggest life changes I’ve ever made happen, and it all came true because I believed I could do it.

One important note I’d like to leave you with is this: You don’t have to be OMG I’m 100% the MOST POWERFUL BEING ON EARTH!!!

That’s not what confidence in your power has to look like. True confidence looks different for everyone.

Confidence doesn’t always look like the loudest person in the room.

Sometimes confidence is that small difference from the day before. The tiny voice whispering to try something new. To try again. To take an action, even if it’s little.

Never forget that the smallest steps can often be the most powerful.
